Separate paintings, and yet together also a single painting. Although she could have imitated the style that the bison were painted in, she had instead painted the hummingbirds in the style that was uniquely hers. The wall contained an equal number of bison and hummingbirds, yet spatially the bison and the hummingbirds were arranged in radically different configurations, creating a visual harmony between the compositions, but not a symmetry. The thumbs of the handprints were placed so close together that the handprints seemed almost to form a set, except one was much smaller than the other, with delicate fingers and a rounder palm.
